EO Candles, DIY!

I used to be a candle addict. I literally had two full cabinets, stacked top to bottom with candles and yet I’d still buy more every new season. It wasn’t long after I started cleaning my house up of chemicals when I learned how many come from burning candles. I was surprised to find that most waxes and scents have chemicals such as, alkans, alkenes, and toluene. When burned, these chemicals cause air pollution in your home, lung damage, asthma, and in some extreme cases- cancer. I was completely heartbroken to find this out. I was ALL IN with going clean with my beauty and household products…but candles!? How would my soul ever TRULY enjoy Fall again!? Even so, I gave them up. It was a rough break but when you burn them as much as I did and you’re being starred in the face with cancer by a loved one, there’s just no playing around.

I’ve come to love my diffuser with all that’s in me but with Fall lurking around the corner, I just needed my candles. Today I tried my hand at making my own and was totally surprised at how easy it was! Here’s a short step-by-step, along with a few of my favorite combos I used; most combos can be used in a diffuser as well…

What you’ll need:

  • 100% natural soy wax
  • Measuring cup
  • Candle wick
  • Straw or wooden stick
  • Jar
  • Scissors or nail clippers
  • A pot
  • Glass bowl or jar
  • Essential oils

Step 1– Boil water in a small pot. When water is hot enough, Scoop 1 cup of the soy wax into glass bowl and set in boiling water.

Step 2– While wax is melting, take wick and measure length of jar; trim about 1-2 inches above jar. Making sure the wick is touching the center bottom of the mason jar, set the straw or wooden stick in center and wrap remaining wick around straw.

Step 3– When wax is completely melted, take off burner and let it sit for 1-2 minutes to cool. When finished cooling, add your choice of essential oils and stir.

Step 4– Pour wax mixture into jar and let it sit.

Step 5- Once the wax has hardened, cut the wick, light, and enjoy!

A few of my favorite EO and spice combos I used:

  • Fall Breeze- 5 drops Tangerine, 3 drops Cinnamon Bark, and 1 drop Clove
  • Walk In the Woods- 4 drops Cypress, 2 drops White Fir, and 2 drops sandalwood
  • 10 drops wild orange and 2 bay leaf
  • Herb garden- 2 drops Rosemary, 2 drops Thyme, 2 drops Oregano, and 2 drops Spearmint
  • Pumpkin Pie- 4 drops Cardamom, 2 drops Cinnamon, 1 drop Wild Orange, and 1 drop Clove.

I’m so thankful for these safe alternatives so I can enjoy my cozy candles and favorite scents while knowing they’re helping my family breathe easy all at once!
